No. 2029 in Pinetown yard circa 2004 |
No. 2029, built in 1936, ofetn referred to as the "Bullion Coach" |
A notice
in No. 2029 reads:
This coach (No. 2029) was built in 1936 as a main-line coach with compartments and coupés.
It was one of the first clerestory coaches with vestibules rather than balconies at either
end.
As such it was used on express trains in the 30's and 40's. It has been painted in the
livery of the "Blue Train" of the same period.
During the 60's it was converted to its present interior. It was used as a coach for
transporting gold bullion from then the Rhodesia to the Rand Refinery in Joahnnesburg.
The open part of the coach was fitted with burglar-guards which have since been removed.
There was also a wall at the entrance to the pagges-way. Due to its history it is referred
to as the "Bullion Coach".
