The first design
to originate from the SAR after its formation was for a 4-8-2 goods engine, the Class 12, and
was used mainly for coal traffic on the Germiston-Witbank route.
They were, in effect, an enlargement of D. A. Hendrie's [Superintendant of the Natal Government
Railways (NGR)] already sucessful Class 3B and they retained the design of plate frames and
Walschaerts's valve gear from this class.
The initial order for 8 engines was delivered by North British Locomotove Co. in 1912 while
a further 18 were supplied by the same company between 1913 and 1915. The final engines of
this type were built by Beyer Peacock in 1921.
Besides the Germiston-Witbank line they were also used around Ladysmith, Natal.
As these engines
equired new boilers they were given the standard No.2 boiler and reclassified as Class 12R.
